Olympic Skier Jackie Chamoun Racy Photoshoot Stir Controversy in Lebanon

Lebanese Olympic Skier Jackie Chamoun, the only one of two athletes representing Lebanon at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, is facing a huge disaster of criticism after her racy photos and video footage went viral in the web. The shoot has sparked outrage in Lebnon and thousands of people are reacting on the social network websites.

While reacting on the backlash, Lebnon’s youth and sports minister Faisal Karami called for inquiry. The ministed told CNN, “My main concern was not to affect Lebanon’s participation in the Sochi Olympics. The Lebanese Olympic Committee held a meeting and concluded that this will not affect Lebanon’s participation in Sochi, and that the matter according to the International Olympic Committee, is a matter of personal freedoms.”

After facing disaster of criticism, 22-year old Chamoun took to her personal Facebook page to address the issue, “I just want to make it clear to everyone who commented, shared the photos that appeared on the net in Lebanon yesterday. Yes I did photos for an Austrian ski calendar with other professional athletes 3 years ago.”

She continued, “The photos of the photoshoot are not like the actual images that are now circulating on the net. The video and photos that you are now seeing are part of the making off, the preparation, it wasn’t supposed to go public. Anyways, I want to apologize to all of you, I know that Lebanon is a conservative country and this is not the image that reflects our culture.”

Chamoun said, “I fully understand if you want to criticise this. Now that I’m at the Olympic Games, these photos that I never saw before are being shared. It is sad. All I can ask to each of you who saw this, is to stop spreading it, it will really help me focusing on what is really important now: my trainings and race.”

Meanwhile, the Lebanese Olympic Committee also released the statement following outrage in the country, “The Lebanese Olympic Committee will not ask to exclude Chamoun from the Sochi Games in adherence to the Olympic rules, especially since the offence did not take place during the preparations (for the Games) nor during the Games.”

Mark Adams, a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said, “It’s clearly not the IOC that chooses torch bearers but, as Dmitry said, she was chosen for what she’s done in sport and she’s a triple gold medallist in skating. She’s done a great deal of work in sport and that’s what she was chosen for, but it was a decision that Sochi took, as they did all with of the torch bearers.”
